October 24th Astronomy Event

Galilean Nights: International Year of Astronomy 2009 Cornerstone Project Event To Be Held at Ridley Creek State Park 7-10pm, October 24, 2009

400 years ago Galileo first observed the moons of Jupiter, mountains on the moon, and many more celestial marvels. Come join members of the Chester County Astronomical Society as they point their telescopes at the sky to observe what Galileo observed - discoveries that ushered in the modern scientific age! The event runs from 7:00pm until 10:00pm on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Ridley Creek State Park, Picnic Area 11.

Members of the CCAS will start off the evening with several short presentations on current events in astronomy. Expert guidance will be given on the different types of telescopes and how to find one that will work well for a beginner. The group will have their telescopes set up and pointed at various interesting objects in the sky. In addition to Jupiter and the moon, galaxies, clusters, double stars, passing satellites, and maybe even some meteors may be seen. It promises to be an interesting and educational event. In the event of clouds or rain the event will be postponed. Please call the park at 610 892-3908 to get an update on the event.

The Chester County Astronomical Society was formed in 1993 by individuals interested in astronomy and a desire to promote that interest among the general public through meetings, speaker programs, and most importantly by observations. Many objects in the universe can be observed using rather modest optical aids. Observations of planets, asteroids, comets, star clusters, nebulae, and even other galaxies are routinely made by some of our members. Anyone who is interested in astronomy or would like to learn about astronomy is welcome to attend meetings and become a member of the Society. One need not own a telescope to be a member. Roger Taylor is the president of the CCAS. Please visit www.ccas.us for more information.

Time: Saturday, October 24, 2009 7:00 to 10:00pm, Place: Picnic Area 11, Ridley Creek State Park
